It is a hair loss condition caused by a combination of genetics and hormones. When the hormone, testosterone, is converted by an enzyme (5-alpha reductase) it becomes a more potent hormone known as Dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
DHT initiates a process of follicular miniaturisation, in which the hair follicle begins to deteriorate. Affected follicles become progressively smaller and hairs are reduced to tiny vellus hairs and eventually fail to grow. It is a genetic trait as you may have inherited genes that make you more sensitive to DHT. Alopecia Areata is characterized by a rather sudden development of bald patches on the scalp, face or body.
It is widely believed to be caused by the body’s immune system; attacking the hair follicles due to its inability to differentiate between foreign invaders and normal healthy cells. Predisposing genetic factors, a cell-based autoimmune response, association with autoimmune diseases (e.g. vitiligo, thyroid disease), and external triggers (e.g. psychological problems, stress, etc) may all contribute to the pathogenesis of the disease.

A relaxing treatment performed at our clinics aimed at ultra-cleansing the scalp to remove excess sebum and to open up pores to allow maximum absorption of the products into the hair follicles. Agents to counteract the effects of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) are then deposited into the pores to stimulate hair follicular activity.
